KC football coaches' group pushing for all-star game
HOWARD RICHMAN; Staff Writer
A version of the old Big Brothers and Sisters high school all-star football game might be on its way back.
Blue Springs football coach Wayne McGinnis said the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association is pushing for a summer all-star game that would match metro area players from Kansas against Missouri. It would be something similar to the Big Brothers and Sisters game, held annually from 1976 until 1985. It was stopped because of declining profits and a lack of sponsors. In the final year, the game lost $4,500 after expenses.
"We feel we've got a good shot at getting a game back here in June," McGinnis said. "Last year when we were getting our association off the ground, one of our goals was to get the all-star game back. " McGinnis said he'd like to see the game played at Arrowhead Stadium, where the Big Brothers and Sisters game was played every year except one. He and other members of the coaches association are scheduled to meet Wednesday with administrators from the Chiefs to see whether that will be possible.
"Some of the Chiefs, like Bill Maas, are helping us," McGinnis said. "He played in all-star games when he was in high school. I coached in one of the Big Brothers games, and it was one of the greatest experiences I had. " McGinnis said profits from the game would benefit a charity.
McGinnis said the search also is on for sponsors.
