Kansas coach likes his team's speed, intensity for Metro all-star game

Olathe South coach Mark Littrell's only concern about coordinating an all-star football team is to make sure players are in condition.
Football condition, that is.

"Some are more ready than others," Littrell said, "and you have to let them in slow."

That might be the only slow element of Kansas' team, which will play at 7 p.m. Thursday in the 11th annual Kansas vs. Missouri Metro All-Star game.
Rosters were selected by the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association.

The event at Olathe District Activity Center will feature some of the area's best seniors. Littrell said a key to winning is getting everyone familiar with various schemes. The Olathe South offense will be used, and the defense will be at the direction of Paola coach Mike Dumpert.

The teams have eight practices to prepare. Littrell has been impressed with his squad's abilities.

"It is very impressive," Littrell said, "the speed and intensity these players have had for this."

Littrell should have plenty of familiarity with some of Kansas' top players. Maurice Mack of Olathe North, The Star's All-Metro Player of the Year, will be there. So will Justin Dyer of Olathe South.

Many of the players appearing in this game are preparing for college football. Littrell said he's never had a college coach concerned about one of his future players' participation.

"I would think they'd want the kids to play," Littrell said. "It's a chance for everyone to see the talent they're going to be getting soon."

Kansas beat Missouri 34-7 for its 10th consecutive victory in last year's game. Olathe South's Travis Jackson and Jason Santifer connected on a 55-yard touchdown pass, while Olathe North's Darren Sproles earned the MVP award with 166 yards and three touchdowns in 10 carries.

Tickets cost $5 at the gate. Persons can get a $1 discount with a Price Chopper card.
