Up to the challenge
Missouri high school football players win for the fourth straight time.
Author: SAM MELLINGER
OK, this one can be interpreted on either extreme.
Missouri's 21-7 victory over Kansas in the annual high school football all-star game on Thursday proves, for the fourth time in a row, that the area's best prep ball is on the east side of State Line Road.
Or ...
The fact that Kansas kept it relatively close -- Grandview's Tim Vincent caught a late touchdown pass -- shows the difference between the states is negligible.
The truth is Thursday's game probably proves nothing, other than if you get together football players six months after their last season ended, you're bound to see some rough edges.
Thursday's rough edges included missed blocks, mistimed pass plays, fumbled snaps and handoffs, penalties, a punt that went minus-3 yards, and a minor skirmish.
Whatever. It was still fun, and that's the point of all-star games, right?
Missouri scored on a short run by 255-pound fullback Anthon Aiono of Park Hill and a 23-yard fumble return by Blue Springs linebacker Jordan Pellock. Kansas scored on a 34-yard, perfectly placed go route from Shawnee Mission West's Tyler Lawrence to Blue Valley's Stephen Blumhardt.
Raymore-Peculiar's Thomas Hodges and Blue Valley's Cody Scribner were chosen MVPs of their teams.
