The Schlagle connection and much more powered the Kansas squad past Missouri 31-17 Thursday night in the fourth annual Metro Dream Classic all-star high school football game.

"One thing we emphasized was teamwork," Kansas Coach Fred Merrell said. "We rotated for every series so everybody got to play.

We came up with plays when he had to."

Schlagle's Jah Seals got things rolling for Kansas at Olathe District Activities Center. He returned the opening kickoff 86 yards before getting tackled at the 8.

Seals scored three plays later on a 1-yard run, and the extra point made it 7-0.

"I just saw a hole, and I just ran," Seals said. "We are all-stars. We've got to believe something like that was going to happen. All-stars work hard."

Seals' teammate, Martez Wesley, helped give Kansas a 24-7 cushion in the third quarter when he caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Olathe East's Scott Wetterstrom.
"I told the quarterback to throw it high, and I would get it," Wesley said. "It's a big honor to catch a touchdown in this game. It feels great to contribute, and it feels good my teammate made a big play."

By no means was it just the Wesley and Seals show. Shawnee Mission North running back Bryan Durland scored a touchdown. Adam Helm of SM South played well at quarterback. He also nailed a 26-yard field goal and four extra points.

Merrell praised offensive coordinator Dave Smith, who was let go last year as SM West's head football coach.

"I chose Dave Smith to be offensive coordinator to show he's a good coach," Merrell said.

Kansas' defense also sparkled, limiting a high-powered Missouri offense to Kamerian Fryer's 1-yard touchdown run and Nelson Young's 2-yard TD run.

Blue Springs South wide receiver Eddie Brooks was selected the offensive player of the game.

"They changed up defenses a lot," Brooks said. "They had a great game plan. They have some good athletes and took care of business."

With Kansas leading 24-14, Blue Springs South kicker Jeff Klee hit a 27-yard field goal, making it 24-17 with 4:27 left.
Missouri stopped Kansas, but a 58-yard punt by Wetterstrom with 2:03 left pinned Missouri at its 18. Kansas stopped Missouri on downs and then scored its last touchdown with 17 seconds remaining.

Kansas is 3-1 in the Dream Classic.
