Runner focuses on football

Brian Martin entered the first practice for the Metro Dream Classic football game Wednesday at MidAmerica Nazarene College already in good shape and with a good work ethic.
Martin, a graduate of Lawrence, has been working out twice a week with the KC Chargers, a track club. He runs the 400-meter dash and the 400 and 1,600 relays.
However, his attention now is on football. For the next 11/2 weeks, he will practice with other Kansas all-stars in preparation for the Metro Dream Classic all-star football game. The game will be at 7:30 p.m. July 17 at Arrowhead Stadium.
"The whole time I'm going to work as hard as I can to get as much playing time as I can," Martin said.
Martin sees this game as a way to impress some football coaches from the University of Kansas who that might attend the game.
Martin, who plays defensive back, will attend KU this fall on a track scholarship and he also plans to try out for the football team as a walk-on.
In Martin's last year at Lawrence High School, he had his share of success. He was part of the football team that won the Kansas 6A title. In track, Martin finished first in the 400-meter dash, second in 100 and third in the 200 at the state meet.
Getting selected to play in the all-star game means a lot to Martin.
